  • What We too often Forget to Do when We Feel Broke, Battered and Beaten Down to the Ground – Step 7

BREATHE – “Here we ask God [or our H.P.* ] for inspiration, an intuitive thought or a decision. We relax and take it easy.  [W]e don’t struggle. We are often surprised how the right answers come after we have tried this for a while.”  (The Big Book, p. 86)

“Must be out-of-doors enough to get an experience of wholesome reality, as a ballast to thought and sentiment.  Health requires this relaxation, this aimless life.”  Henry David Thoreau (1817 – 1862) U.S. poet/novelist

Poem For People That Are Understandably Too Busy To Read Poetry
    by Stephen Dunn

    Relax.
    This won’t last long.

Or if it does, or if the lines
    make you sleepy or bored,
give in to sleep, turn on
    the T.
    V.
    , deal the cards.

This poem is built to withstand
    such things.
    Its feelings
    cannot be hurt.
    They exist
    somewhere in the poet,
    and I am far away.

    Pick it up anytime.
    Start it
in the middle if you wish.

It is as approachable as melodrama,
    and can offer you violence
if it is violence you like.
    Look,
    there’s a man on a sidewalk;
the way his leg is quivering
he’ll never be the same again.

    This is your poem

and I know you’re busy at the office
or the kids are into your last nerve.

Maybe it’s sex you’ve always wanted.

    Well, they lie together
    like the party’s unbuttoned coats,
    slumped on the bed
waiting for drunken arms to move them.

    I don’t think you want me to go on;
everyone has his expectations, but this
is a poem for the entire family.

    Right now, Budweiser
    is dripping from a waterfall,
    deodorants are hissing into armpits
    of people you resemble,
and the two lovers are dressing now,
    saying farewell.

I don’t know what music this poem
can come up with, but clearly
    it’s needed.
    For it’s apparent
they will never see each other again
and we need music for this
because there was never music when he or she
left you standing on the corner.

You see, I want this poem to be nicer
    than life.

I want you to look at it
    when anxiety zigzags your stomach
and the last tranquilizer is gone
and you need someone to tell you
I’ll be here when you want me
like the sound inside a shell.

The poem is saying that to you now.

But don’t give anything for this poem.

    It doesn’t expect much.
    It will never say more
    than listening can explain.

Just keep it in your attache case
    or in your house.
    And if you’re not asleep
by now, or bored beyond sense,
the poem wants you to laugh.
    Laugh at
yourself, laugh at this poem, at all poetry.

    Come on:

    Good.
Now here’s what poetry can do.

    Imagine yourself a caterpillar.

There’s an awful shrug and, suddenly,
You’re beautiful for as long as you live.

  • The Tools We Use to Destroy Verbal Bombs of Terror if We “want to Live in Peace and Harmony” – Step 7

“The process of the Seventh Step brings about a peace of mind that we never dreamed possible. We sense that what is present throughout our search for spiritual growth is our ability to feel our Higher Power’s love for us.” “It doesn’t matter that  we will not attain a state of perfection or complete humility in our life-time.” (It Works, How & Why, p. 53)   “Affirm divine calmness and peace, and send out only thoughts of love and goodwill if you want to live in peace and harmony. Never get angry, for anger poisons your system.”  – Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 – 1953) renowned Bengali Yogi

    Peace XVIII

    by Khalil Gibran

The tempest calmed after bending the branches of the trees and leaning heavily upon the grain in the field. The stars appeared as broken remnants of lightning.  But now silence prevailed overall as if Nature’s war had never been fought.

At that hour a young woman entered her chamber and knelt by her bed sobbing bitterly.  Her heart flamed with agony. But she could finally open her lips and say, “Oh Lord, bring him home safely to me.  I have exhausted my tears and can offer no more, oh Lord, full of love and mercy. My patience is drained and calamity is seeking possession of my heart. Save him, oh Lord, from the iron paws of War; deliver him from such unmerciful Death, for he is weak, governed by the strong. Oh Lord, save my beloved, who is Thine own son, from the foe, who is Thy foe. Keep him from the forced pathway to Death’s door; let him see me, or come and take me to him.”

    Quietly a young man entered.

He wrapped head in bandage soaked with escaping life.

So he approached her with a greeting of tears and laughter, then took her hand and placed against it his flaming lips. And with a voice which bespoke past sorrow, and joy of union.  And uncertainty of her reaction, he said, “Fear me not, for I am the object of your plea. Be glad, for Peace has carried me back safely to you, and humanity has restored what greed essayed to take from us. And be not sad.  But smile, my beloved. Do not express bewilderment.  For Love has a power that dispels Death; a charm that conquers the enemy. I am your one. Think me not a specter emerging from the House of Death to visit your Home of Beauty.

“Do not be frightened, for I am now Truth, spared from swords and fire to reveal to the people the triumph of Love over War. I am Word uttering introduction to the play of happiness and peace.”

Then the young man became speechless and his tears spoke the language of the heart, and the angels of Joy hovered about that dwelling, and the two hearts restored the singleness which had been taken from them.

At dawn, the two stood in the middle of the field contemplating the beauty of Nature injured by the tempest. After a deep and comforting silence, the soldier said to his sweetheart, “Look at the Darkness, giving birth to the Sun.”

  • Perhaps this is the Most Poignant Uses for the Pain We Discover Deep Inside – Step 7

THE PRICE OF ADMISSION – “In every case, pain had been the price of admission into a new life.   But this admission price had purchased more than we expected. It brought a measure of humility, which we soon discovered to be a healer of pain.” (12 &12, p. 75)

“But if I can go through what I went through, if I can still live and go through that pain for life on earth to change for the best, let it be.” – Immacullee Ilibagiza ( 1972 – ) Rwandan-Tutsi survivor & author

Michael Vick Redemption from Dog Fighting

It’s hard for most animal lovers to truly forgive this guy for what he did, but in the end, he served his time and has not been caught doing anything bad since then, so you have to give him his due.

Mike Vick redeemed himself on the football field by becoming an even better passer after being away from the game for four years.

In fact, Vick’s career renaissance is in a league of its own. Nothing more than a bit player for the Eagles during the 2009 season—his first season back in the league after serving almost two years in prison because of his dogfighting conviction—Vick electrified the NFL in 2010.

Yes, he was a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback for Atlanta, but since his return from jail, Vick has elevated his game to a new level.

He has been more accurate than he was before, and more of a real, honest to goodness QB.

Oh, and since he served his time, no one should begrudge his return to the NFL. Even convicted felons need employment, and while most do not sign multi-million dollar contracts like Vick has, as long as he keeps his nose clean and plays well, that’s all that matters.

Football and professional sports, in general, is a business that entertains, and Vick does seem genuinely sorry for what he did.

Vick can never undo the horrific things he allowed to happen to those poor animals, and many people simply will never forgive the man. And that’s OK.

His redemption has come on the playing field.  (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/989483-the-10-best-redemption-stories-in-nfl-history#slide1)

HOLDING ONTO THE NEW JEWELS IN OUR CROWN –  ” … when we have difficulty practicing spiritual principles, we turn to the God [or H.P.] of our understanding. In this step, we ask a loving [H.P.] to remove our impatience, our intolerance, our dishonesty, or whatever
shortcoming is currently in the way.” (It Works, How & Why, p. 52)  “One needs to be slow to form convictions, but once formed they must be defended against the heaviest odds.” Mahatma Gandhi (1869 – 1948) – India Independence Movement Leader from British rule

    Value of Time :

Once, a king and a lazy man named Haria were very good friends. One morning, the king said, “Why don’t you do work to earn some money?”  Haria said, “No one gives me job. My enemies told everyone that I never do any work in time.”  The kind king said, “You can go into my treasury and collect as much wealth as you can, till sunset.” Haria rushed home to tell this to his wife. She said, “Go and get the gold coins and gems now.”  “I cannot go now. Give me lunch first.”

After lunch, he took a nap for an hour. Then in the late afternoon, he picked some bags and went to the palace. On the way, he felt hot so he sat under a tree to rest. Then, two hours later, he got up to go but saw a man showing some magic tricks. He stopped to watch for an hour again.  When he reached the palace it was already time for sunset. The palace gates had been shut. So Haria had lost a golden chance because he had not learnt the value of time.  (http://www.english-for-students.com/Value-of-Time.html)

  • A Powerful Tool We can Use to Change the World for Good – Step 7

WISE PRAYER CAN CHANGE THE WORLD – “God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change. Courage to change the things we can. And wisdom to know the difference.” (12 & 12, p. 52)

“Prayer power is real.  By putting it into action, we will be able to stay more constantly in higher awareness than ever before. If we can do that, the world will quickly change.”  – James Redfield (1950 – ) U.S., spiritual author

    At a Lunar Eclipse

    by Thomas Hardy

Thy shadow, Earth, from Pole to Central Sea,
Now steals along upon the Moon’s meek shine
In even monochrome and curving line
    Of imperturbable serenity.

How shall I link such sun-cast symmetry
With the torn troubled form I know as thine,
That profile, placid as a brow divine,
With continents of moil and misery?

And can immense Mortality but throw
So small a shade, and Heaven’s high human scheme
Be hemmed within the coasts yon arc implies?

Is such the stellar gauge of earthly show,
Nation at war with nation, brains that teem,
Heroes, and women fairer than the skies?

  • The Ancient Wisdom of the Autumnal Season Unfolds – Step 7

OLD-TIMEY WISDOM  –  “Theirs is the quiet opinion, the sure knowledge and humble example that resolve a crisis.”  “[T]hey lead by example. This is the experience which has led us to the conclusion that our group conscience, well-advised by its elders, will be in the
    long run wiser than any single leader.” (12 &  12, p. 135)

“Besides the noble art of getting things done, a nobler art is leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of nonessentials.”  Lin Yutang (1895 – 1976) writer & inventor of the 1st Chinese typewriter

When has the wisdom of the group conscience been evident in your journey, lately?

What Is an Informed A.A. Group Conscience?

The group conscience is the collective conscience of the group membership.  And thus represents substantial unanimity on an issue before definitive action is taken.   Through the sharing of full information, individual points of view, and the practice of A.A. principles the will of the group is determined.  To be fully informed requires a willingness to listen to minority opinions with an open mind.

On sensitive issues, the group works slowly.  Discouraging formal motions until a clear sense of its collective view emerges. Placing principles before personalities, the membership is wary of dominant opinions.  Then a well-informed group arrives at a decision. The result rests on more than a “yes” or “no” count.  Precisely because it is the spiritual expression of the group conscience.  The term “informed group conscience” implies that pertinent information has been studied.  And all views have been heard before the group votes.” (P-16 The AA [G]roup)

  • How We can be both Strong and Humble while Holding Our Head Up High – Step 7

“An attitude of humility is not the same as humiliation, nor is it a denial of our good qualities.  On the contrary, an attitude of humility means that we have a realistic view of ourselves and our place in the world.” (It Works, How & Why, p. 49)

“I just try to try to keep an attitude that I don’t know what I’m doing.  Not to the point where I’m beating myself up, but I just go in thinking that I have a lot to learn. And I hope I still have that attitude 30 years from now.”- Tobey Maguire (1975 – ) U.S. actor, aka Spiderman

In what ways have you been humble where you used to be arrogant in the past, lately?

    An Attitude of Humility

Today in our What is a Christian series, we’re going to talk about humility. Humility is the mortal enemy of pride. The word humility (humble, humbled, humbleness, etc.) appears 71 times in the Bible. If God tells us something 71 times, it’s probably important to Him, right?

So then, what does it mean to have an attitude of humility? Humility is a little difficult to define but I’m going to do my best. Humility is a heart issue; meaning we aren’t suddenly humble just by acting a certain way or saying certain things. Humility starts in our hearts.

Some people think that never accepting compliments and always talking about what a bad or worthless person they are makes them humble – this is false humility. Pride on the other hand tells us that we should shout our accomplishments from the rooftops and that our accomplishments make us better than people who have accomplished less. As Christians, we shouldn’t exhibit pride or false humility.

The simplest way that can describe real humility to you is this – know who you are in Christ, know who you were or who you would be without Christ, and treat everyone as though they are just as awesome as you because they are.

    Humility isn’t about downplaying

Humility isn’t about downplaying the abilities that God has given you, it’s about knowing that God has given special abilities to everyone. Humility is about doing things for others because you know that God loves them just as much as He loves you. Humility is about putting the Lord and His people first and yourself second. Humility is about seeing other people as treasures not as obstacles in your way.

Jesus is the perfect example of humility. Jesus knows who He is – Lord, Teacher, Healer, Son of God, Prince of Peace, etc. While He was here on earth however, Jesus also put himself second in order to show others how much God loved them and we are called to do the same.

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” – John 13:13-17 (https://www.projectinspired.com/an-attitude-of-humility/)

  • Our Serenity and Peace Need Not be as Fleeting as Dandelions in a Spring Breeze – Step 7

“There was a sense of victory, followed by such a peace and serenity as I had never known. There was utter confidence. I felt lifted up, as though the great clean wind of a mountain top blew through and through.” (The Big Book, p. 14)

“Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.” – Jawaharlal Nehru (1889 – 1964) 1st Prime Minister of India

In what ways have you actively sought peaceful means which resulted in personal serenity and peace of mind, lately?
    Making Good

    by Robert William Service

    No man can be a failure if he thinks he’s a success;
he may not own his roof-tree overhead,
He may be on his uppers and have hocked his evening dress –
(Financially speaking – in the red)
He may have chronic shortage to repay the old home mortgage,
And almost be a bankrupt in his biz.
    ,
But though he skips his dinner,
And each day he’s growing thinner,
If he thinks he is a winner,
    Then he is.

    But when I say Success I mean the sublimated kind;
A man may gain it yet be on the dole.

To me it’s music of the heart and sunshine of the mind,
Serenity and sweetness of the soul.

You may not have a brace of bucks to jingle in your jeans,
    Far less the dough to buy a motor car;
But though the row you’re hoeing
    May be grim, ungodly going,
If you think the skies are glowing –
    Then they are.

For a poor man may be wealthy and a millionaire may fail,
It all depends upon the point of view.

It’s the sterling of your spirit tips the balance of the scale,
It’s optimism, and it’s up to you.

For what I figure as success is simple Happiness,
The consummate contentment of your mood:
You may toil with brain and sinew,
And though little wealth is win you,
If there’s health and hope within you –
    You’ve made good.

    ON HUMAN DESPAIR –

    “So at the outset,
    how best to live and
    work together as groups
    became the prime question.
In the world about us we
    saw personalities destroying
    whole peoples. The struggle
    for wealth, power, and pres-
    tige was tearing human-
    ity apart as never be-
    fore.” (12 & 12,
    p. 130)

PLACING A COOL HAND ON A “STONE OF HOPE” –

    “It is this one intent
    we see today, uniting
    our desires with the need
of every heart, the call of
every mind, the hope that lies
    beyond despair, the love attack
    would hide, the brotherhood
that hate has sought to sever,
but which still remains as God
created it. With help like this
beside us, can we fail today
    as we request the peace
    of God be given us?
    (A Course in Miracles
